A Waymo is a robotaxi, meaning a taxi that handles the driving on its own with nobody behind the wheel. Here in Austin, Uber is the only place to book one for now, so the Waymo app isn't needed just yet.

Map of the Austin Service Area

This area includes the city and a few smaller towns nearby. Both Rollingwood and Sunset Valley fall within it.

  • Rollingwood
  • Sunset Valley

This boundary has shifted in the past and will shift again. Uber and Waymo last grew the area in January 2026. If you live close to the border, check the app each time instead of trusting a map you saw earlier.

How Large Is Waymo's Austin Service Area?

Since that January 2026 expansion, the area spans roughly 150 square miles. So far, that's the biggest it has reached.

Freeways are part of the service area, which helps on longer journeys across the city. Waymo is gradually adding freeway trips, so some rides still won't use one. That's just how the rollout works, not a problem with your booking.

The airport sits outside the area. Uber doesn't serve rides to or from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, though Waymo has announced plans for airport service later on. If you have a flight, arrange a regular car with a driver for that part of your trip.

Booking a Driverless Taxi in Austin

Just open Uber and request a ride the way you normally would. Austin rides work only through Uber, so there's no extra app to download and no new account to create.

The vehicle that shows up is a Jaguar I-PACE, which is an electric car fitted with Waymo's cameras and sensors on top. Nobody sits in the driver's seat, so you get the car to yourself.

This arrangement is set to change. Waymo intends to bring its own app to Austin in January 2028, giving you another booking option. Until then, though, Uber remains the only choice.
