Anyone in Miami can now use Waymo by downloading the app and asking for a ride. There is no invite and no waiting list. The first riders outside the company joined in January 2026, and by April 2026 the service was available to the whole public. Nobody sits behind the wheel. The app handles the job a driver would do, so you enter your destination and the car arrives.
The service area map
Inside the app, a shaded area shows where a Waymo can collect you and take you. You can only book a ride if both your pickup and your drop-off are inside that area. The covered area has expanded fast since the service began, so an old screenshot may no longer match reality.
| Date | Coverage |
|---|---|
| Launch, January 2026 | 60 square miles |
| Today | 151 square miles |
The area has grown a lot since launch. Since the boundary keeps shifting, checking the live map in the app on the day of your trip is the best option.
Where the service area reaches
Today the covered zone runs from the beach across the western suburbs and north along the coast. Places within it include Aventura, Doral, and Miami Beach, which means you can ride between the beach and the mainland without switching to another car.
Freeway travel is possible on longer journeys. Waymo offers freeway rides in Miami, which helps on trips toward Doral or Aventura, because local roads make those journeys take longer. You switch this on yourself through the app's highway access option. Until you enable it, the car stays on local roads.
Miami International Airport sits outside the zone for now. According to Waymo, the airport is planned, though no date has been announced, so reaching the terminal requires a different option at present.
Robotaxis in Miami
A robotaxi is simply a taxi that drives itself. You book through an app, and the vehicle's computer and sensors handle the trip. Three companies operate such taxis in Miami, but just 2 are taking passengers right now.
- Waymo: anyone can ride it through the Waymo app, open since April 2026.
- Tesla Robotaxi: it has been running in Miami with no safety driver since July 2026, and you book through Tesla's own app.
- Zoox: still in testing, and since April 2026 only employees, family, and friends can ride, so the public cannot book a trip.
For a first-timer, Waymo has been working in the city the longest of the 3. Waymo's fleet is made up of the Jaguar I-PACE and the Ojai, so those are the cars you'll see pull up.
How to book a ride
You will not find a counter, a phone number, or curbside hailing. It all happens in the app, so setting it up ahead of time means less stress later.
- Get the Waymo app on your iPhone or Android phone, because booking happens only in the app.
- Add your pickup point and destination, and the app checks whether both fall within the zone before you confirm.
- To let the car use freeways on longer trips, switch on the highway access option in the app.
- Then request the ride and wait at the pickup spot shown in the app.
The service has been available to everyone through the app since April 2026. You do not need to apply or join a waiting list.
Other cities with driverless rides
