How big is the service area?
Since launching, the ride area has grown. A service area covers the parts of the city where the cars can pick you up and take you to. NBC San Diego reports that it began at 50 square miles and now spans 90 square miles following an expansion into La Jolla.
| Stage | Area covered |
|---|---|
| At launch | 50 square miles |
| After expanding | 90 square miles |
Since the boundary has already shifted once, it helps to check your destination before you plan a ride.
Where to see the map
The easiest way to see exactly where the cars go today is the map in the Waymo app. It's the same app you'll use to book, so it's worth a quick look before you head out.
