Waymo NYC Map
You will not find a rider map for New York City, since there is no place to book a ride there. So a New York map will show up only after rides begin.
The 8 vehicles that traveled on city streets belonged to a trial rather than a paid service. Waymo's New York City testing permit has run out, so those cars are no longer operating. That means there is no active zone to display, according to Streetsblog NYC.
If New York shows up inside the Waymo app, look under Up Next. That status means the city is planned, not yet running. Waymo's rides page has the current list: Waymo's rides page.
Does Waymo Have a Service Area in New York City?
Not at the moment. A service area covers the roads where a robotaxi company will take trip requests, and the city has none of its own yet. Those 8 test vehicles traveled without any paying passengers, and they are off the road now.
A service area requires two changes. First, Waymo needs approval to operate once more, because its testing permit has expired. Second, New York State has to complete its rules for cars with no driver, and that work is paused right now, as Streetsblog NYC reports.
Waymo has not shared any details on the size of a New York zone or the boroughs it might include. Until the company puts out a map, any boundaries described by others are only guesses.
Robotaxis on New York City Streets Right Now
A robotaxi is a taxi that handles the driving on its own, with nobody at the wheel. At present, none of them are carrying the public in New York City.
Only Waymo was known to be running trials here, using 8 cars. That work has stopped for now. So no robotaxi, whether from Waymo or another company, can be ordered by a New Yorker today.
New York still appears on the future-city list Waymo publishes, per Waymo.
Can You Ride a Driverless Taxi in New York City?
That is not possible at the moment. Right now there's no app, Waymo's or anyone else's, that will send a driverless car to you anywhere in the five boroughs.
The reason is straightforward. The state law allowing driverless cars to take passengers has been paused, and Waymo's testing permit has ended. Until the state picks its driverless-car law back up and Waymo can test again, rides here aren't on the table, per Streetsblog NYC.
To try a driverless ride in the near future, you would have to go to a city where the service is already running.
Cities Where Waymo and Other Robotaxis Ride Today
Public robotaxi rides are already available in several cities. Some welcome everybody, some began with invitations, and others remain trials limited to employees.
