Where Waymo Goes in Phoenix
The fleet covers roughly 353 square miles across the Valley.
Places inside the zone include:
- Downtown Phoenix
- Scottsdale
- Tempe
- Mesa
- Chandler
The area reaches from Encanto Park to Desert Ridge. For a ride to happen, your pickup and your destination both have to fall within that zone.
Phoenix rides can use the freeway, so a longer trip, like Chandler to Scottsdale, doesn't have to crawl along surface streets.
Checking Your Address
Streets on the outer edges of these towns may sit outside the service area, so check your exact address in the app instead of relying on the town name.
How to Book a Ride
These rides work like any normal car trip, except the vehicle handles the driving and there is nobody sitting in the driver's seat. All bookings go through the Waymo app on iPhone or Android.
- Download the Waymo app and create your account.
- Enter your destination and confirm your ride.
- When the car arrives, check that it's the one shown in your app.
- Get in and fasten your seat belt.
The fleet uses Jaguar I-PACE and Ojai vehicles.
Phoenix teens from 13 to 17 can travel on their own using a teen account.
Getting a Ride at Sky Harbor Airport
Sky Harbor was the first airport to offer Waymo pickups and drop-offs, and that service has run there since November 2022.
You can meet the car in 2 ways:
- At the terminal: go to Terminals 3 or 4, Level 1, South Door 8.
- By Sky Train: choose either the 24th Street or the 44th Street station.
Once you are on board the Sky Train, ask for the ride.
Waymo has also announced plans for Mesa Gateway Airport.
Other Robotaxi Companies in Phoenix
In Phoenix, a robotaxi means a taxi that drives itself, and only Waymo lets the public book one. Zoox is testing cars on Phoenix roads, and Tesla says Phoenix is coming, but neither one takes public riders yet.
Zoox is testing its vehicles on Phoenix roads without offering rides to the public. Tesla lists Phoenix as a future Robotaxi city, but it has not given a date.
Waymo in Other Cities
Phoenix came first, yet the same app, and in certain cities the Uber app, now handles rides elsewhere too. Launch dates give you a sense of how established each service has become.
| City | Booking | Public service since |
|---|---|---|
| Phoenix | Waymo's app | October 2020 |
| Los Angeles | Waymo's app | November 2024 |
| Austin | Uber's app | March 2025 |
| Atlanta | Uber's app | June 2025 |
| Miami | Waymo's app | January 2026 |
| Dallas | Waymo's app | February 2026, invite-only at first |
Several of these cities also host services from competing companies. Tesla offers Robotaxi trips in Austin, Dallas, Houston, and Miami, Avride is available through the Uber app in Dallas, and Atlanta riders can book May Mobility through Lyft, where a safety operator rides in the car. Both Zoox and Nuro remain in the testing phase in the cities where they appear.
